The 2016 red L’Arcane Les Amoureux Côtes-du-Rhône: This wine's evocative name matches its alluring blend, predominantly Grenache, from five crus in the Southern Rhône Valley. It's a tribute to Xavier Vignon's deep affection for the region.
The red SM Côtes-du-Rhône: Striking a perfect balance between Syrah and Grenache, this cuvée is a unique fusion of the Northern (S) and Southern (M) terroirs. It offers a delightful surprise, blending different vintages for a harmonious experience. The result is a captivating mix of dark fruit flavors and floral undertones, showcasing a perfect balance of diverse characters.
Interestingly, the tradition of celebrating love on February 14th isn't as romantic as it seems. It was actually established for commercial reasons in the late 1950s. However, the broader historical context adds more depth to this date. Valentin of Terni, a Christian priest and martyr, was known for secretly officiating marriages. His execution by Emperor Claudius II on February 14th and subsequent canonization around 495 added a layer of martyrdom to the day.
Before February 14th became associated with couples, it marked a significant Roman festival dedicated to Lupercus, the god of fertility. Known as Lupercalia, this festival concluded with a banquet where men and women could meet and form relationships, often leading to marriages.
These pagan celebrations, though, were frowned upon by early Christians for their libertine nature. In an attempt to infuse more piety and order, Pope Gelasius I in 494 established a feast for the purification of the Virgin Mary, held on February 2nd, where people paraded with candles. This shift in celebration paved the way for the modern-day traditions of February, including making crepes!
