It's one of the Rhône Valley's up-and-coming appellations!
Tucked away in the heart of the southern Rhône Valley, Cairanne remains a hidden gem for many, yet it has been winning over wine lovers worldwide with its rich, elegant, and characterful wines. In 2016, it earned its place among the prestigious Rhône Valley Crus—a well-deserved recognition of its exceptional terroir and quality.
Here, the vines thrive on sun-drenched hills, rooted in an exceptional patchwork of terroirs—from limestone pebbles to marl and rounded stones. This unique geology shapes wines with depth, warmth, and complexity, winning over wine lovers time and again. But what truly sets Cairanne apart is its outstanding quality for the price—still a rare find for wines of this calibre!
At Xavier Vignon, we’ve handpicked the finest parcels to showcase the full potential of this appellation through two outstanding cuvées: the 2020 Cairanne and La Tempérance.
A unique terroir
Located in the Vaucluse, Cairanne enjoys a warm, sun-drenched Mediterranean climate, tempered by the cooling influence of the Mistral. This perfect balance allows the grapes to reach full maturity while retaining their freshness.
The vineyards of the appellation span three distinct soil types, each shaping the wines' unique complexity and character:
- The Aygues Terraces: Composed of pebbles and clay, these soils produce elegant wines with fine tannins and bright red fruit aromas.
- The Miocene Hills (to the north): A terroir rich in marl and limestone pebbles, lending notes of dark fruit, spice, and refreshing minerality.
- The Southern Garrigues: Featuring alluvial and rocky soils, this area yields bold, sun-kissed wines with generous spice and ripe fruit aromas.
Classic Rhône Valley varieties
Cairanne’s red wines are rooted in Grenache Noir (at least 40%), typically blended with Syrah and Mourvèdre, along with touches of Cinsault or old-vine Carignan. This harmonious combination brings depth and elegance, with a refined structure, ripe fruit flavours, and a touch of spice.
Though less widely known, Cairanne’s white wines are well worth discovering. Made from Clairette, Grenache Blanc, and Roussanne, they offer a lively freshness, bright citrus and floral aromas, and a subtle mineral edge.
A rising star in the Rhône Valley
What sets Cairanne apart is its strong sense of community and commitment to sustainable winemaking. More and more producers—including us at Xavier Vignon—are embracing organic practices to preserve the character of the terroir and let its personality shine.

The 2020 Cairanne – Bold, refined, and full of character
The 2020 Cairanne is a testament to time-honoured vineyards and exceptional terroir. Sourced from 80- to 100-year-old vines, it benefits from higher-altitude plots (250 meters) set on limestone-rich soils, bringing both richness and vibrancy to the wine.
Its deep, intense colour sets the stage for what’s to come. On the nose, ripe black cherries, plum, and blackberry mingle with hints of dried thyme and spice. The palate is bold yet silky, with supple tannins and a long, lingering finish.
Awarded 90/100 by James Suckling, this wine perfectly balances power and finesse—and is ready to be enjoyed now or to cellar for a couple of years for even more complexity.

La Tempérance : A certified organic wine bridging tradition and innovation
With La Tempérance, our goal was to bring out the full potential of Cairanne while preserving the terroir’s natural expression.
