Gigondas, splendidly set within the Dentelles de Montmirail and spanning around 1200 hectares, boasts a vibrant landscape of terraced vineyards, whipping mistral winds, and chalky soils. It stands out as one of the Rhône Valley’s most triumphant appellations in recent years, marked by an unstoppable ascent. This acclaim is largely due to its robust red wines, which constitute 98% of its output, often featuring venerable Grenache vines. These wines are not only generous and layered but also demonstrate admirable aging potential. Young Gigondas wines dazzle with vibrant flavors - a kaleidoscope of spices, wild garrigue, dark fruits, and floral notes.

Established in 1971, the Gigondas appellation has distinguished itself by its rugged and unspoiled natural environment. Vine cultivation in this region dates back to the Gallo-Roman era, but the first documented mention of a Gigondas vineyard is from the 12th century. Its elevation from a Côtes du Rhône Village to the status of a 'cru' – the first to achieve this recognition – was a game-changer. This transformation propelled Gigondas into the realm of great wines, marking a new chapter in its history.

Though often simply associated with its village, Gigondas is distinguished by its Mediterranean climate and, more significantly, its unique geology. Predominantly composed of stony red clays, these soils extend to the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail. Serving as the foundation for its renowned wines, the land in Gigondas offers more complexity than one might initially think. It features a mosaic of gray limestone, black clays, sandstone, clayey marls, and even chalk, each contributing to the distinctiveness of its wines.

Today's diversity in Gigondas is ushering in an exciting era for white wines. Starting from the 2023 vintage, whites predominantly made of Clairette will proudly bear the AOP label. This marks a noteworthy shift, initiated by a group of about twenty vintners but likely to grow rapidly, signifying a dynamic new trend for white wines in Gigondas. It's a development to keep an eye on!

Spotlight on: The 2019 red Gigondas by Xavier Vignon. This radiant Grenache, cultivated from 80 to 100-year-old vines, marries purity with creamy tannins and a velvety texture.
